how long is a piece of string is the only answer .

a mate of mine had a rally 200 which he painted in smoothrite enamel  . whilst it was not going to win best paint prize at a custom show it was more then good enough for an old scooter ,in fact it was quite smart .

one large tin of smoothrite ,some quality brushes ,various fillers to take out imperfectio ns and elbow grease was the price

about ten years ago i done a car body restoration course at night skool .
scooters are mickey mouse compared to the size and complexity of  cars and you would only need a shed and a cheap compressor to do it yourself .
or even a dry day and some brushes like my mate with his rally .

see whats on at evening classes at your local college .
post some photo's of your nifty fifty as well  Grin

You can do it with rattle cans if you're not bothered about a perfect finish.
I've done 2 in my garage that way.

It's not the painting, its the rust removal and prep that's the hard bit.

Don't put too much paint on each coat - that is the most important thing to remember - you can always go over the same bit again, but you'll have to wait for the whole thing to dry before you can sand out runs and bubbles.

its possibly still worth taking it to a few under the arches style body shops for a quote because the car body work trade have access to fast drying paints which in some cases self level to cover a whole rough surface underneath.  you or i cant get hold of them cos theyre highly poisonous .
hence why you see paint sprayers wearing breathing equipment .

they'd run across the scooter with a da sander and weld up any holes and then paint it .it would be a breeze for them in comparison to a car

you could get the quote right down by dismantling the trim ,taking the lights etc etc off yourself so that its ready for them

is there a scooter dealer near you who could look at it and give you a quote ?
